Hospitality as a Way of Life

Eating together has been a central Christian practice since the very beginning of our movement. From the early church to today, the table has been a place of fellowship, formation, and shared life. The gospel spread not just through sermons, but through meals, from one table to the next, one home to another. The table is a very ordinary place. So routine and everyday, it’s easy to overlook it. Yet it holds extraordinary potential to create life-changing community. Jesus himself used meals to teach, welcome, restore, and invite. And when we gather around a table with friends, neighbours, coworkers, or strangers, we are practicing that same way.

We encourage you to continue this ancient Christian practice: Open your home. Share a meal. Create space. Not just for food, but for fellowship, stories, and the Spirit of God.

Baseline Practice

Aim to eat at least 2 meals (or you can share coffee, dessert, etc.) with others this month. Eat once with a person from church and once with a non-Christian friend, neighbour or co-worker.

Next Steps

Try Practicing Hospitality

As an individual

  • Invite a co-worker to lunch.
  • Take a friend to coffee.
  • Use your commute to work to listen to an audio Bible.
  • Have a late night dessert with another mum.
  • Plan a morning breakfast with someone before work.
  • Invite someone to share dinner with you.

With Your Family

  • Invite your neighbours to a bbq.
  • Have some friends over for pizza and games.
  • Pass out ice creams to the neighbourhood kids.
  • Make s'mores with another family around a fire pit.
  • Gather a few different families for a potluck lunch.

In Community

  • Share a meal during a city group meeting.
  • Go out for dessert after a group gathering.
  • Get to know someone who just joined the group by sharing a meal with them.
  • Plan a dinner party with your group and invite those who don’t yet belong.
  • Have a potluck picnic in the park and invite strangers in the park to help themselves.
